HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT REBOZO: PLAIN WEAVE VS. TWILL WEAVE

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT REBOZO: PLAIN WEAVE VS. TWILL WEAVE

Rebozos—traditional Mexican shawls—are beautiful, versatile textiles used for everything from babywearing and daily support to ceremonial and personal care practices. With so many styles available, choosing the right rebozo can feel complicated.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the key differences between plain weave and twill weave rebozos, along with our sub-collections, so you can confidently choose the one that best suits your needs.

Quick Overview

  • Twill weave = soft, thick, flowing → ideal for heavier carrying and cooler climates
  • Plain weave = light, breathable, structured → ideal for everyday use and warm climates
  • Frayed plain weave = lightest and coolest option, tropical environments
  • Gracia collection = premium plain weave with added durability and grip

Plain Weave Rebozos

By Alfred Barlow, Ryj, PKM - Adapted from The History and Principles of Weaving by Hand and by Power by , 1878, S. Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, London., CC BY-SA 3.0,

Plain weave is the simplest and most traditional weaving structure. The weft (horizontal thread) passes over one warp thread and under the next, creating a balanced and durable fabric that looks similar on both sides.

Our plain weave rebozos are:

  • Lightweight and breathable
  • Easy to handle and beginner-friendly
  • Typically 60–75 cm wide
  • Around 230 gsm, making them thin yet supportive

Their structured feel provides excellent support, especially for carrying smaller babies or everyday use.

Plain Weave Sub-Collections

Standard Plain Weave

These are traditional, versatile, everyday rebozos. They are breathable, firm, and practical—perfect for beginners and daily use. These are our basic collection rebozos and a good rebozo to start with because of the versatility. Weight of approx. 230 gsm.

Frayed Plain Weave

Frayed rebozos are even lighter and softer, with a weight of approximately 218 gsm. The frayed sections increase airflow, making them especially comfortable in warm climates. These rebozos have a mix of plain and twill weave with open spaces in between.

They are ideal for:

  • Personal wrapping
  • Head covering
  • Carrying small/newborn babies
  • Ceremonial use, such as closing the bones rituals

Their softness and lightness make them a favorite for those seeking comfort and breathability.

Gracia Collection

The Gracia Collection represents our premium plain weave rebozos.

These rebozos feature:

  • A tighter weave for enhanced durability
  • A slightly grippy texture for better hold
  • A traditional width of approximately 60 cm
  • A lightweight feel at around 230 gsm

Over time, the fabric softens beautifully with use and washing while maintaining its strength. Due to the narrower width, they are especially well-suited for carrying smaller babies, as well as for massage and personal care practices.

Twill Weave Rebozos

Twill weave is a more complex structure where the weft thread passes over and under multiple warp threads in an alternating pattern. This creates a distinctive diagonal line across the fabric.

Our twill weave rebozos are:

  • Thicker and softer
  • More flexible and adaptive
  • Approximately 295 gsm
  • Typically 65–75 cm wide (Cocol styles: 61–65 cm)

These are our thickest and softest rebozos, designed especially for comfort during longer babycarrying sessions, cooler climates and for people who want chunky soft rebozos with traditional patterns.

How to Choose the Right Rebozo

Choosing the right rebozo depends on your needs, climate, and experience level.

  • For newborns or small babies: Plain weave
  • For toddlers or heavier carrying: Twill weave
  • For hot climates: Frayed or standard plain weave
  • For colder climates: Twill weave
  • For beginners: Plain weave (easier to learn and handle)
  • For long wearing sessions: Twill weave (more flexible and comfortable over time)
  • For extra softness: Twill weave (especially Cocol rebozos)

Belly wrapping is easiest with a rebozo that is longer than 2 meters, especially if you are pregnant. A rebozo of 2.7m is often described as a size 2 wrap and can be used for different carries. For auto massage a 2m long rebozo is enough, but for positions where one person is laying down a 2.5m - 3m rebozo is handiest. You can also add rings to a 2.7m rebozo. Check our tutorials HERE.

Final Thoughts

Each rebozo carries its own unique character, shaped by its weave, weight, and texture. Whether you’re looking for something light and breathable for everyday use or soft and supportive for longer carrying, there is a rebozo that fits your needs.
